In 1976, what would come to be known as FONATUR’s third Integrally Planned Resort, Los Cabos began to operate. Los Cabos is a tourist development that encompasses the villages of San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas that are interconnected by an amazing 33 kms (20.5 miles) corridor that offers a privileged location in the south end of the Baja California peninsula, very close to the Canadian an American west coast.
The two small villages which are situated within the sea, the desert and the mountain are acknowledged as international golfing and fishing centers; furthermore, they are currently shaping a dynamic tourist city where 25% of the state’s population lives.
This natural sanctuary has been declared a world heritage site; it has amazing landscapes and an impressive biodiversity combining ocean and desert that very few places in the world have. It also offers unsurpassable climatological conditions and an average annual temperature of 24°C (75°F) that North Americans find irresistible.
This IPR’s Master plan currently conceives a 915.78 hectare polygon of which 6.32% is destined to the urban zone, 76.69% is destined to the tourist zone and 16.72 is destined to the preservation zone.
Los Cabos provides the sport fishing enthusiasts with a wide variety of fish species (the ones that stand out are the blue, the golden and the striped marlin, the wahoo and the sailfish). Its natural richness is complemented by state-of-the-art sailing facilities; the Cabo San Lucas Marina stands out with a 1000-ship sheltering capacity.
Since it has nine excellent golf courses where over 200,000 golf rounds are played annually, it is considered Mexico’s golf capital. It has a huge potential market: millions of golfers coming from the West coast and Southeast of the US. Besides, several of its golf courses have been designed by specialists such as jack Nicklaus. Golf’s development has been such that the specialist magazine Golf Digest classified Los Cabos as one of the 13 best golfing destinations worldwide.
This destination has strongly positioned itself in the market segment of tourists of high consumption who are mainly from the California, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Washington, Colorado and New York markets.
